The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) dipped to 14.95 during trading hours, its lowest level since February, before closing NEAR 15. This decline reflects dwindling expectations of near-term turbulence in the S&P 500, forcing volatility buyers to unwind their positions amid steadily rising equities.

Realized volatility has collapsed further, with one-month S&P 500 price swings now at just 6.9%—far below the VIX’s implied expectations. The disconnect has left some analysts puzzled, given the market’s recent placidity. "Thin August trading could change the mood fast," noted one trader, referencing the VIX’s historical tendency to rebound this month.
